Gravity of Place
The Gravity of Place is a series of work that revolves around themes of HOME, WORK, and PLACE. These themes were played out against a backdrop of the local history of the area in which I live, and the history of work and labor in Maine; recounting the shift from an agricultural-based economy to an industrial one, to that of present day.
David Allen has a tendency to value what others have discarded and left behind. Abandoned spaces and post-industrial detritus are frequently central components in his art, and his work often embodies themes of humanity and our relationship to the environment. Allen’s creative endeavors range from painting, illustration and mixed media, to assemblage, mechanical sculpture, and, occasionally, performance. While painting continues to be a core of his creative practice, it is often incorporated as an element in larger installations or site-specific environments.
